Become a Minoan during the Theran eruption
It started as an average day on the beautiful island of Crete, you were enjoying the Mediterranean sun until you felt the earth shake violently. Another earthquake, you've been having them all week. Running out to the beach, you see the Murex divers have stopped working in fear of the large flash of light from the horizon. As they leave the water, the waves begin to recede, moving away from the island. The air becomes thick, it's hard to breathe, before you can shout to get to the hills, the water returns. Smashing into the island as if with a vengeance, the tidal wave crashes down onto the beach and the surrounding areas, buildings collapse, people killed.
The Theran eruption, 10 times stronger than the eruption of Vesuvius, was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. It sent ash across the entire world, records from China showed the volcanic winter even reached them. Ash covered the world, tsunamis erupted out onto every nearby coastline, earthquakes shattered the ground. The island of Thera was utterly destroyed, leaving a large crater in the middle, an image that was so impactful it inspired many major myths, including the city of Atlantis.
150 Metres is a solo TTRPG about the Theran Eruption and the lives of the Minoans in Bronze Age Crete that experienced it. This game explores the grief and loss after a devastating natural disaster and how people rebuild their lives.
Played over three acts, 150 Metres is played with a tarot deck, a block tower, and post-it notes which you will need to destroy. Slowly construct your life and the people around you then watch as a freak act of nature destroys everything you built. How will you cope? How will you reconstruct and rebuild your life as everything crumbles around you?
The current version of this game isn't decorated to a standard I usually prefer but I wanted to release it within the time period of the jam. I would consider this game an ashcan version but considering ash was one of the major causes of death in the topic of the game it feels a bit poor taste so lets call it a beta!
This game was made during the Special Interest TTRPG Jam alongside some amazing creators in an effort to produce works inspired by our favourite topics and special interests. My special interest is, as you can tell, Bronze Age Crete and the Minoans. I studied the Minoans in my Bachelors degree and have written two different dissertations on the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and the ways he's made it difficult to tell the story of the Minoans and the problematic ideology that led him to reshape the archaeology.
